Winter Variable Oystercatchers

Over the last 20 years our wintering flocks of Variable Oystercatchers
have massively increased (from 2 to 200 on the Avon-Heathcote Estuary;
from 2 to 50 at Akaroa + smaller flocks at Purau-Ripapa Island, Okains
Bay and Brooklands Lagoon.

A number of Variable Oystercatchers have been colour-banded up at
Kaikoura as chicks and they are beginning to turn up here – indicating a
winter dispersal.

I photographed 3 roosting on the carpark opposite Redcliffs Park
yesterday (pics of 1 attached)

They were:

Blue White /Blue Orange   – banded on 21/12/07 <<31 May 2009 090.jpg>>
 <<31 May 2009 101.jpg>>

Blue White/ Yellow Orange  – banded on 21/12/07

And

Green Yellow/  Orange Yellow  – banded on 28/11/08

Because they are a big bird and relatovely tame, its pretty easy to see
and read the band combos.

You read them as if you were standing behind the bird, so left leg top
band, then lower band,   next, right leg, top band then lower band. Its
vital to get the order right as other birds will have the reverse combo.

Coast guys especially, but also others who come across these things out
on the peninsula, etc, please get the nband combo if you see any of
these banded oystercatchers, or try to get a digital photo (showing both
legs) from which we can work out the combo later.

This is a species that is likely to recolonise our CHCH beaches and
rocky shorelines in the next few years so gaining an understanding of
their movements and behaviour will be pretty useful in gaining an
insight on how to assist them recolonise as a resident breeding species.

Tuesday 12 May 2009 Travis Wetland Pateke update.

Kia ora all
Thanks for the update Ossie about Cape Kidnappers pateke.  We have some
encouraging news of our own. Yesterday Matt and I confirmed the presence
of an unbanded female pateke at Travis. Most likely a survivor of the
first generation of ducklings hatched at Travis.  The female pateke was
seen with a banded mail bird (we think OY-M) and they were behaving as a
pair. So coming up to the second anniversary of the release in May 17 we
have 8 survivors plus one new recruit.

Wednesday 29th 2009 April Travis Wetland Pateke update.

May 16th will mark two years since the release of 20 captive reared
pateke into Travis Wetland. We are confident that 8 pateke remain on
site.  4 males and 4 females.  Last breeding we observed courtship and
mating behaviour. In September 2008 we were able to confirm a female
brown teal on a nest with 6 eggs.  In November 2 adult pairs were seen
with 2 young ducklings each.  Since then we have not seen any sign of
unbanded or juvenile birds. Last month, April 2009, we have observed the
pateke carrying out their courtship behaviour. The male birds are in
their breeding plumage.  At the moment six of these are back on the main
pond, as they were last Autumn, and can be seen from the bird hide often
roosting on the edge of the raupo to the north.  These birds are easy to
identify as they have are still carrying their radio aerials, though the
transmitters are no longer working. They are also colour banded.

Of the 12 pateke that did not survive 10 secummed to predators within
the first six months following their release and one pair left the area,
the female was found dead in Beckenham and the male was never located.
Causes of death included car and predation by harriers, cats and stoats.

Cheers

Monday 27 April 2009

Hi folks,

Here is the latest monitoring count of Canada Geese and other large
waterfowl city-wide.

Canada Goose  – high country birds are moving in now for winter. Numbers
are tracking slightly below average for this time of year.

3393 counted in mid April 2009, c.f. 4045 in mid May 2007;  2656 in late
April 2006 (post-Jan 2006 cull);  3294 in late April 2005; 3991 in Mid
April 2004.

Main concentrations of geese were at the Estuary/Bromley (1489) and
Travis Wetland (1113). Typical numbers for this time of year, although
the estuary area is down compared to some previous years.

In the NW CHCH (airport area), the closure of the Belfast Oxidation
Ponds and fishing/boating activities at Lake Roto Kahatu has seen most
geese (as well as Black Swan and Paradise Shelduck) converge on the Styx
Mill Basin. 382 geese there is a high number. It will be interesting to
hear from John Parry if any damage to new plantings occurs over winter?
Certainly with that many geese and c.250 Paradise Shelduck, the grass is
going to be kept pretty low!

Dispersal of geese along the Avon River continues, with a new site added
to the census (central city Avon). Flocks of geese are now going as far
upstream as Colombo Street Bridge. Unless people are happy with geese
grazing Victoria Park, the riverbanks beside the “strip” etc, I suggest
that “do not feed the geese” go up soon!  As soon as passers-by start
giving food to these geese we’ll end up with them permanently camped in
the inner city. Next step is the Botanic gardens and the ideal feeding
habitat of the Hagley Park playing fields. I give them 2-4 years and
unless action is taken we could end up with 500 geese in the Botanic
gardens/hagley/mona vale/central city Avon area.

Black Swan  – A total of 1079 – the largest count since April 2004. Most
(983) on the estuary/ponds, with only a scattering elsewhere. No
management concerns – they’re not currrently feeding on farmland, and
many will return to Lake Ellesmere as the winter rains arrrive.

Paradise Shelduck – 1218 counted in Mid April 2009 is a record count for
this time of year , c.f.  527 in mid May 2007; 496 in late April 2006;
480 in late April 2005, 282 in mid April 2004.

Part of the increase is due to the population recovery and
recolonisation of city habitats by this species in recent years. Another
reason for higher numbers is the unusually large concentration of birds
in the Heathcote Valley (434 birds) where they’ve been attracted to
stubble fields following harvesting of grain crops.
